OMO and several members of its Governing Board added their signatures to a letter supporting the HEART for Women Act (S.422/HR 1032). Special thanks to the American Heart Association and WomenHeart for organizing this advocacy effort.
An excerpt from the letter:
Congress has the opportunity to make a difference for women with heart disease. We need to bolster efforts for research, education and heart disease screenings for uninsured and underinsured women. H.R.1032, the HEART for Women Act, which was introduced on February 12, 2009, provides for programs to educate health care providers and women about the prevalence, warning signs and treatment of heart disease in women; authorizes funds to conduct an awareness campaign for older women and expands the WISEWOMAN (Well-Integrated Screening and Evaluation for Women Across the Nation) to improve screening for low-income women at risk for heart disease and stroke in all 50 states. The bill also requires the FDA to report safety and effectiveness data by gender, race and ethnicity in order to shed new light on how drugs work among specific populations. We need cardiovascular research focused on gender specific disease indicators to shape guidelines for women, which should improve care and treatment.
